Željava and the Douglas C-47 Dakota
Not far from the hotel lies Željava — an abandoned underground air base carved into Mount Plješevica, right on the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. At its entrance stands an old Douglas C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft, better known as the Dakota, placed there back when the base was still active.
Today that aircraft is the most photographed detail of the whole site and the landmark that tells you you are on the right road towards the tunnel entrances. It is a favourite stop for riders and for anyone curious about the history of this region.
